Pet parents: the Dexter app

How do I create a Dexter account and sign in?

Go to app.houseofdexter.com and create an account with your email address or your Google account, then add your first pet. Dexter is free for pet parents, with no paywall.

  1. Open Dexter on the web in your browser. The App Store and Google Play apps are coming soon. If you'd like an email when they're out, use Get notified when the app is out on our home page.
  2. Choose to create an account with your email and a password, or with your Google account.
  3. If you use Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google. We never see your Google password.
  4. Next time, sign in the same way you signed up.
  5. You need to be 13 or older to create an account. If you're under 18, you'll need a parent or guardian's permission first.

How do I add a pet, or more than one?

Add each pet once, with their own profile. Every record, reminder, Passport and Dexter AI answer stays with the right pet.

  1. Go to Add a pet.
  2. Enter your pet's name, then choose their species: Dog, Cat, Rabbit, Bird, Turtle, Hamster, Horse or Other.
  3. Add their breed, date of birth, weight and any allergies. For example: Bruno, Dog, Golden retriever, no known allergies.
  4. Tap Save pet.
  5. To add another pet, such as Luna the cat, tap + Add pet in the pet switcher and repeat the steps.
  6. Switch between pets with the pet switcher. You can delete a pet from the app at any time.

What is the Pet Passport, and how do I share it by QR?

The Pet Passport is a QR code for your pet's key details. You choose what each scan shows, field by field, and by default it shares only your pet's identity and vaccination status.

  1. Open your pet's Passport, for example Bruno's Passport.
  2. Check each row. It reads Shared or Not shared. Out of the box, Pet identity and Vaccination status are Shared. Allergy notes, Medication notes, Emergency contact, and your phone and email are Not shared.
  3. Switch any row on or off. Mask all contact details keeps your phone and email out of every scan with one switch.
  4. Under Access lasts, pick how long sharing works (see How long sharing lasts).
  5. Tap Show QR and let the groomer, daycare, sitter or vet scan it. Or tap One-time code and read the code out (see Use a one-time code).
  6. The Pet Passport isn't an official, government or travel document. It shows the details and records you've added to Dexter, and nobody checks them on your behalf.

Who sees what when someone scans my Passport?

Businesses using HoD Business see the details you've switched on. Anyone else who scans with a phone camera sees, at most, your pet's identity and vaccination status.

  1. Anyone with a phone camera. No app or login is needed to scan. They see, at most, your pet's identity and vaccination status, and only if you've shared them. They never see allergy notes, medication notes or contact details, whatever your settings.
  2. Microchip numbers are masked in that public view, shown like this: •••• •••• ••21. The full number is never shown there.
  3. Businesses using HoD Business see the rows you've set to Shared. Everything else reads Not shared on their screen too.
  4. A business that needs more can ask. See When a business asks to see more.

How long does sharing last?

You choose: One-time, 24 hours or Always. You can revoke access at any time, whichever you pick.

  1. In your pet's Passport, find Access lasts.
  2. Choose One-time: it works for 15 minutes and ends after the first scan. Good for a single visit.
  3. Or choose 24 hours: good for a day at daycare or a boarding drop-off.
  4. Or choose Always: it stays on until you turn it off.
  5. Changed your mind? Revoke access.

How do I use a one-time code instead of the QR?

If scanning is awkward, share a one-time code. It works once and expires after 15 minutes.

  1. Open your pet's Passport and tap One-time code.
  2. Read or show the code to the business. They type it in instead of scanning.
  3. The code works for one use only and stops working after 15 minutes, even if nobody used it.
  4. The business sees the same details a QR scan would show, and nothing more.

What happens when a business asks to see more?

You decide. A business can ask for an extra detail, and nothing changes until you allow it.

  1. You get a prompt in Dexter, for example: "Sample Grooming Studio wants to see Allergy notes".
  2. Tap Allow to share that detail with that business, or Decline to keep it Not shared.
  3. If you decline, the business keeps seeing only what you'd already shared.
  4. You can still revoke access later, even after allowing it.

How do I see who scanned my pet's Passport?

Every scan is logged. Your access history shows who scanned and what they saw.

  1. Open your pet's Passport and tap Access history.
  2. Each entry shows who scanned, when, and which details were shown.
  3. After a scan you'll also see Access logged.
  4. Don't recognise a scan, or no longer need it? Tap Revoke on that entry.

Can I see what my groomer, vet or boarding home logged?

Yes, if they use HoD Business. A groom, a vet visit and its vaccines, or the walks, meals, medicine and play from a boarding stay show on your pet's Passport in Dexter.

  1. Check your pet in with your Passport QR or a one-time code. You don't need to retype your pet's details, and your phone and email are not shared unless you choose to share them.
  2. Afterwards, or during a boarding stay, open your pet's Passport in Dexter to see what they logged.
  3. For anything else about your pet's care, talk to the business directly.

How do I stop sharing with one business, or all of them?

Revoke access for one business, or for every business at once. It stops working straight away.

  1. Open your pet's Passport and go to Access history.
  2. To stop one business, tap Revoke next to it.
  3. To stop every business at once, tap Revoke all access.
  4. Revoking stops future access straight away. It can't undo what a business has already seen or copied.
  5. To share again later, show your QR or a new one-time code.

Can I print my Passport or save it as a PDF?

Yes. Print your Passport or save it as a PDF, and it includes only the details you're sharing.

  1. Open your pet's Passport and tap Save as PDF.
  2. Your phone or browser opens its print screen.
  3. Choose Save as PDF to keep a file, or pick a printer.
  4. To change what's on the page, change which rows are Shared first, then save it again.

How do I add records, and what is Smart Import?

Upload a vet record as a PDF or photo, and Smart Import pulls out the details. You check them before anything is saved.

  1. Open your pet's records and tap Add a record.
  2. Choose Take photo, Upload file or Enter manually.
  3. Smart Import works with PDFs, photos (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF) and text files (TXT, MD, CSV), up to 20 MB each.
  4. When it's done reading, you'll see Check the details. Look at each row, such as Record type, Vaccine, Date given and Next due, and tap Edit on anything that's wrong.
  5. Tap Save record, or Discard if it isn't right. Nothing is saved until you tap Save.
  6. If a file can't be read, you'll see "We couldn't read this file. Add the details yourself." Enter it manually instead.
  7. Smart Import can make mistakes, which is why you review every detail. You can delete a record from the app at any time.

How do I set a reminder?

Set Medication, Vaccine or Custom reminders, and get them by push, email or both, at the time you choose.

  1. Tap New reminder and pick a type: Medication, Vaccine or Custom.
  2. Medication: choose how often (once, twice or three times daily, every 8 hours, every 12 hours, or as needed).
  3. Vaccine: add the due date. Dexter reminds you before it arrives.
  4. Custom: anything else you want to remember, like flea and worm treatments.
  5. Under Notify me by, choose Push, Email or Both. Then choose how early to be reminded and the time of day. Reminders follow your time zone.
  6. Tap Save reminder.
  7. When a course of medication ends, tap Mark course complete and its reminders stop.
  8. Reminders depend on your phone's settings and connection, so don't rely on them alone for critical medication.

What can Dexter AI help with?

Dexter AI gives general pet-care guidance using your pet's profile, recent records and open reminders. It isn't a vet. In an emergency, contact a vet straight away.

  1. Open Dexter AI. You'll see a chip such as Using Bruno's profile, so you know which pet it's thinking about.
  2. Ask about food, behaviour, habits or something that seems off. For example: "Bruno ate a grape. Should I worry?"
  3. Dexter AI uses your pet's species, breed, age, weight, allergies and current medicines, plus recent records and open reminders, to tailor its answer.
  4. It won't diagnose, prescribe or change doses. If something sounds urgent, it tells you to contact a vet.
  5. It can't add reminders or records for you. Add those yourself (see Set a reminder).
  6. Worried, or is it an emergency? Contact a vet straight away. Don't wait for an app.

Can I book a vet or groomer in Dexter? Not in the app today.

How does the Dexter community work?

The community is where pet parents post when a pet needs help: Lost posts for a missing pet, and Adoption posts for a pet who needs a new home.

  1. Tap New post and choose Lost or Adoption.
  2. Add up to five photos. We remove hidden location data, such as GPS, from them.
  3. Your location is shown to about 1 km. Turn on Share exact spot only if you want to show the precise place.
  4. Don't put your home address, phone number or other personal details in a post unless you're happy for other Dexter users to see them.
  5. Tap Post. Other Dexter users can see it and Reply.
  6. There isn't a way to report posts or block other users in the app. Use your own judgement, meet in safe, public places, and never send money to someone you've met through a post. If a post worries you, write to support@houseofdexter.com.
  7. You can delete your own posts by deleting your account, and they go with it.

How do I post about a lost pet?

Post it in the community so people nearby can see it. Lost posts don't wait for a check, so they reach people nearby without delay.

  1. Tap New post, then Lost.
  2. Under What happened?, describe your pet and where and when they were last seen. For example: "Brown dog, red collar, last seen this morning".
  3. Add up to five clear, recent photos.
  4. Check the location. It's shown to about 1 km unless you turn on Share exact spot.
  5. Tap Post, then keep an eye on replies.
  6. Lost posts are community help. Nobody at House of Dexter searches for your pet, and we can't promise anyone will respond, so contact local shelters and neighbours too.

How do I post a pet for adoption?

Create an Adoption post with the reason, what you're looking for in a home, and notes about the home. Some Adoption posts are checked before they appear.

  1. Tap New post, then Adoption.
  2. Add the reason your pet needs a new home, your requirements, and notes about the home they'd suit. For example: "Pepper, 3, looking for a quiet home".
  3. Add up to five photos. The location is shown to about 1 km unless you turn on Share exact spot.
  4. Tap Post. Some Adoption posts are checked before they show in the community, so yours may take a little while to appear.
  5. Adoption posts are for rehoming only: don't sell animals, ask for payment or advertise in them.
  6. When you meet someone, choose a safe, public place and use your own judgement. We're not part of any arrangement between users.

Do you sell my data, and who do you share it with?

No. We don't sell your data, and we don't use it for advertising. We share it only with the businesses you choose through your Passport and the service providers that help us run Dexter.

  1. Your Passport: businesses see only what you switch on, for as long as you choose (see Who sees what).
  2. The community: other Dexter users see your Lost and Adoption posts.
  3. Service providers: companies that help us run Dexter, such as hosting and AI processing, may use your information only to provide their service to us.
  4. Smart Import and Dexter AI: to read a document or answer a question, we send it, with the relevant details about your pet, to our processing providers through our own servers.
  5. Want a copy, a correction or a deletion? Email support@houseofdexter.com with the subject "Data Request", from the email on your account.

What does the cookie and analytics banner mean?

On our website, Google Analytics stays off unless you choose Allow analytics. We don't use it for ads, and we don't collect pet or health data through it.

  1. On your first visit, choose Allow analytics or No thanks. If you choose No thanks, nothing loads.
  2. To change your mind, tap Cookie settings at the bottom of any page.
  3. If you withdraw, we stop analytics and delete its cookies on our site.
  4. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as No thanks.
  5. This is only about houseofdexter.com. It doesn't change anything in the Dexter app.

What permissions does the app ask for?

Dexter asks for a permission only when you use the feature that needs it. You can switch each one off in your phone's settings, and only that feature stops working.

  1. Camera and photos: to scan vet records for Smart Import and to add pet photos.
  2. Location: for Lost and Adoption posts, rounded to about 1 km unless you share the exact spot.
  3. Notifications: to send your reminders.
  4. To change one, open your phone's settings, find Dexter and switch the permission on or off.

How do I delete my account?

Delete it in the app in a few taps, or request deletion by email if you can't sign in. Deletion can't be undone.

  1. In the app (fastest): go to Profile, then Settings, then Delete account.
  2. Re-enter your password, or sign in with Google again, and confirm. Deletion happens straight away.
  3. Can't sign in? Use our delete account page and choose Request deletion by email. We'll send a confirmation link that works for 24 hours, and nothing is deleted until you open it and confirm.
  4. What goes: your account, pets, records and uploaded documents, reminders, Dexter AI chats, Passport settings and sharing, and your community posts and replies. Records of past Passport scans are kept only in anonymised form, and some data may be kept where the law requires it.
  5. Only want to remove some things? You can delete pets, records and reminders in the app without deleting your account.

How do I set up my business, branches and modules?

After you sign in for the first time, pick the module for your kind of business and follow the set-up steps. One account can run several branches, businesses and modules.

  1. Choose your module: Vet Clinic, Grooming or Boarding Home.
  2. Follow the onboarding steps for that module.
  3. Add your branches: My Clinics for vet clinics, My Centers for grooming, Boarding Homes for boarding.

How do I check a pet in with their Pet Passport?

Open Scan Passport, scan the pet parent's QR or type their one-time code, and you'll see the details they've chosen to share.

  1. In your module, open Scan Passport.
  2. Ask the pet parent to show the QR from their Pet Passport in the Dexter app, or to give you their one-time code.
  3. Scan with your device's camera. The camera scanner works in Chrome and Edge browsers and on Android. You can also paste the code or use a USB scanner.
  4. If they gave you a code, open the Share code tab and type it in. Codes work once and expire after 15 minutes.
  5. You'll see a card with only the details the parent has switched on. Anything else reads Not shared.
  6. The details come from the pet parent's own Dexter records. HoD Business shows them as shared by the parent and doesn't check them.
  7. Check the pet in. The visit appears in Check-ins.

How do I ask a pet parent to share more?

Request the extra detail from the pet's Passport card. Nothing changes until the parent allows it.

  1. After scanning, on the pet's card, choose Request more.
  2. Pick the detail you need, such as allergy notes or an emergency contact.
  3. The pet parent gets a prompt in Dexter and can allow or decline.
  4. Until they allow it, the row stays Not shared. If they decline, you keep seeing only what they'd already shared.
  5. The parent can revoke access at any time, and it stops straight away.

Where can I see check-ins and past scans?

Check-ins lists each pet you've checked in and out, and Dexter Activity shows your Passport scans.

  1. Open Check-ins in your module to see who's checked in and to check pets out.
  2. Open Dexter Activity to see each scan: which pet, when, and what was shown.

What can I do with the vet clinic tools?

Keep patients, visit notes, vaccinations, prescriptions and follow-ups for your clinic together.

  1. Pets: your patients and their owners.
  2. Medical Records: visit notes, prescriptions and follow-ups.
  3. Vaccinations: each patient's vaccinations, with the next due date. Visits and vaccines you log show on the pet's Passport in the pet parent's Dexter app.
  4. Dashboard: a daily view of your clinic, including vaccinations due.
  5. My Clinics: every branch, if you have more than one.
  6. Staff and Settings: your team and your clinic's details.

What can I do with the grooming tools?

  1. Services: your menu, with durations, size and coat options, and add-ons.

  5. Staff and Settings: your groomers and your centre's details.

  1. Your client adds their pet in Dexter and sets up the Pet Passport.
